COMMENTS & OBSERVATIONS

The decision was made to dive Currimundi Reef. A strong wind warning had been issued but was forecast not to arrive until evening. We made use of the recently refurbished ramp at the Power Boat Club and passed over the Caloundra Bar with ease. The trip north to the dive site was a little slower than normal, the waves coming from different directions and having short periods. During the first dive the anchor line just hung in the water there being no breeze to speak of. The wind started to rise slightly as we entered the water for the second dive and was producing rolling crests as we resurfaced. By the time we had travelled back to the Pumicestone Passage it had abated. Not-so-common species worth mentioning are Doris sp. 1 and Tambja morosa (only sighted here once previously). Tambja tenulineata is also a relatively rare recording at this site (Sighted on 4 surveys) and has only been recorded by us in July and September. With the exception of Doris sp. 1 and Thuridilla carlsoni all of the other species are generally recorded throughout the year.

Taxonomic Diversity:
16 of the 21 species sighted were dorids (3/4 the total) comprising 3 x phanerobranchs, 4 x porostomes (all belonging to Phyllidiidae) and 9 x cryptobranchs (all but one belonging to Chromodorididae). The other 5 species comprised 1 x aeolid, 1 x dendronotid, 1 x arminid, 1 x cephalaspidean and 1 x sacoglossan sea slug. If diet is considered then 15 of the 21 species sighted are spongivores.

Our Historical Data:
– This survey is number 32 at this site since 08/05/2011
– Last surveyed on 14/03/2021
– 133 species have been recorded here
