Phyllidiella sp. 06 Undescribed

Only a single specimen of this species has been sighted so far – inshore, sub-tidally at Innaminka Rock, Bowen, in the Whitsundays. Size was approximately 14 mm.

The notum is translucent white with hints of a pinkish tinge. A black line loops across anteriorly, close to the rhinophore bases, and runs posteriorly down each side of the notum to join together in the region of the anus. At the region of the rhinophores a transverse offshoot on each side links to a black continuous submarginal band encircling the entire mantle. The white region of the notum carries distinct separate (not coalesced) low rounded tubercles of varying size that are opaque-white topped. The rhinophores are relatively large, have diagonal lamellae, black for the majority of their length but seem to become whitish basally.

External appearance would suggest placement in the Phyllidiella genus however it does not seem to fit readily into already described species therefore we are keeping it separated.

As with all phyllidiids, Phyllidiella sp. 06 is a spongivore.
