This species is similar to the sympatric Trapania brunnea but there are significant differences. The background colour is reddish-brown covered in numerous yellow spots rather than a uniform dark brown with sparsely scattered white spots and there is yellow in the white pigmented regions that Rudman (author of both species) states is never present in Trapania brunnea.
“ It is somewhat similar externally to T. brunnea but in that species the background colour is a uniform dark brown and there are no yellow spots in the large white patches.” Rudman, Sea Slug Forum, 2001.
