Weinkauffia sp. 01

Author: Undescribed

Order: Cephalaspidea  Family: Haminoeidae

Maximum Size: 3 mm

Sightings: Sunshine Coast

Name change: In the paper by Oskars et al, 2019, (A molecular phylogeny of the gastropod family Haminoeidae sensu lato (Heterobranchia: Cephalaspidea): a generic revision) the genus Weinkauffia was shown to be a distinct clade. They further state: “The genus is characterised by the presence of a deeply bilobed cephalic shield with large unpigmented periocular areas surrounded by a pigmented ‘mask’ ….” and “The shells of Weinkauffia are unique among haminoeids and distinguishable by an oval shape with a narrow elongate aperture where the upper and lower lip project beyond the core shell. The upper lip is pointed and folds sharply towards the apex. The opaque white bands that are found in Weinkauffia reliquus and W. macandrewii are also not known in any other haminoeid genus.”

While this species seems to fit those characteristics, and hence belongs to Weinkauffia, the shape of the shell does not match the two aforementioned species so we are of the opinion it is undescribed.

(This species was previously listed by us as Colinatys sp. 02)
